Feb. 22-23 recap: Vernon wins 5th-straight Sussex Cup, Mendham rallies past Roxbury

VERNON 7, NEWTON-LENAPE VALLEY 3

Dylan Shea scored four goals with an assist as Vernon claimed its fifth-straight Sussex Cup with a 7-3 win over Newton-Lenape Valley at Skylands Ice World.


Evan Steinbach tallied two goals and two assists for Vernon (6-3-2), which scored six straight goals between the first and second period after falling behind on Cameron Cherry's goal. T.J. Quimby had a goal and an assist, Lucas Brennan dished out three assists, and Ayden Steinbach had two assists in the win. Ozzie Deluca made 28 saves.


Cherry finished with two goals and an assist for Newton-Lenape Valley (2-8-1). Ryan Lynch also scored.


MENDHAM 8, ROXBURY 6

Tristan Aikenhead had a hat trick and two assists to help Mendham rally from a four-goal deficit to earn an 8-6 win over Roxbury at Mennen Arena.


Mendham (3-3-2) trailed, 5-1 early in the third period, before scoring six straight to take a 7-5 lead.


Kyle Jenkins tallied two goals and two assists for Roxbury (6-5).


MADISON 5, MONTVILLE 2

Aidan Niceberg scored twice with an assist as Madison wrapped up an unbeaten Halvorsen Division season with a 5-2 win over Montville.


Cormac McNamara had a goal and two assists for Madison (10-2), which finished Halvorsen play with a perfect 8-0 mark and will be the top seed for next week's Halvorsen Cup. Tyler Shannon had a goal and an assist, while Johnny Hamwee also scored. Keaton Tom made 13 saves in the win.


Owen O'Hara scored both goals for Montville (1-5-1).


Girls: MADISON 4, WESTFIELD 2

Maya Tahl had a hat trick to lift eight-seed Madison to a 4-2 win over nine-seed Westfield in the first round of the NJIGHL Cup.


Mia McSherry had a goal and an assist for Madison, which picked up its first win of the season (1-6). It will take on top seed Morristown-Beard in the quarterfinals on Friday.
